Cleveland’s Afi Scruggs is both a writer — once a Plain Dealer columnist, now a freelance journalist — and a musician who plays jazz, funk, rock and Latin music. Bass guitar is her main instrument but she plays others as well. She’s participated in the Lottery League, where local musicians form random new bands by drawing names and spend two months writing and rehearsing material for “The Big Show.”

So she’ll have a lot of wisdom to impart when she presents “Heart + Soul: A Kids’ Songwriting Workshop” at Lake Erie Ink: A Writing Space for Youth in Cleveland Heights. There she’ll guide kids of all ages in the basics of telling their own stories, thoughts and feelings in lyrics that can be set to music. The two-hour workshop is $5. Register register at lakeerieink.org/register or call 216-320-4757.
