It’s been seven years since Brett Wesley aka Wesley Bright first hit northeast Ohio stages with Wesley Bright & the Hi-Lights. Their horn-driven, nostalgia-drenched, old-school soul sound filled clubs with dancers as sweaty as Wesley himself, whose vocals overflowed with electric emotion, leaving everyone drained.
The Hi-Lights came to an end two-and-a-half years ago, but Wesley’s commitment to performing class soul music did not. He formed his own band, Wesley Bright & the Honeytones (a nod to his other business, beekeeping in urban Akron lots and marketing products through his Akron Honey Company), with a similar sound.
The band has plans to release a series of singles, in the style of those old ’60s 45s now so treasured by collectors. One of those, “You Don’t Want Me,” drops this week at a show at the Beachland Ballroom where there’s always plenty of room for dancing. Washington D.C. soul/funk band Aztec Sun opens.
Admission is $15.
