It’s a serious topic but we try to keep it fun. That describes our Future of Cleveland party tonight at CSU, but it pretty much describes a lot of what we do at Cool Cleveland. We believe in promoting this region, it’s unsung superstars, budding entrepreneurs, and locally generated events. We’d call it economic development, but that would be boring. And we see this region as anything but boring. Instead, read our review of Marcia Pledger’s new book on entrepreneurs, then learn what Roldo wonders on the Medical Mart. Mansfield talks Green Jobs and Judging the Judges and Peter Chakerian talks LeBron and the red-hot Cavaliers with sports institution Joe Tait. Round it out with the new Whiskey Daredevils and a look at a quintessential Cleveland creative factory and you’ll have a better idea of what’s in store for Cleveland’s future. –Thomas Mulready

Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels revolutionized music. His band Run-D.M.C. was the first rap act to chart in the Top 40, the first to score gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums, the first on the cover of Rolling Stone, the first with a Grammy, the first to appear on MTV. They’ve spawned not just the entire genre of Hip-Hop, but influenced music across all boundaries. Could a musical act be any more groundbreaking than that?

McDaniels learned he was adopted at age 35 over the phone from his adoptive mother, and now has become an advocate for adoptee rights and foster youth, working closely with Adoption Network Cleveland, who are brining him back to Cleveland for the upcoming National Adoption Conference Wed 4/22 thru Sun 4/26. Thomas Mulready of Cool Cleveland spoke with him in Downtown Cleveland as he was preparing for the run-up to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Watch the video, then catch up on the valuable services of Adoption Network Cleveland. “It’s Like That!” http://www.RunDMC.com

Gene Crosby got the help she needed to purchase her dream home a few blocks from where she grew up from Greater Circle Living, a forgivable loan program for people who work in Greater University Circle and choose to buy a home there. After renting for her entire life, she exclaims, “This belongs to me… It’s mine!”” From her convenient location in the East 80’s along Chester Avenue, she has a 15 minute walk to work at University Hospitals, and a 15-minute drive to just about anywhere.

She received a $15,000 forgivable loan from Greater Circle Living, which she used as a down payment. Then she got busy in her new 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath coach home with a full basement. Watch the video, and click on www.FairfaxRenaissance.org for details on receiving a forgivable loan from Greater Circle Living.

Wally Berry brags that his business is in the toilet. And he’s not kidding. Worn and leaky household toilet flappers waste 11 million gallons of water every single minute. His simple and elegant invention, the Siphon Flush, works on an accordion method, and is guaranteed for 20 years not to leak.

But an idea for an invention is never enough. In order to do testing and build a prototype, Lakewood resident Berry accessed funding through the New Product Development & Entrepreneurship Loan Fund, administered by MAGNET, the Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network.Watch the video for a cool demonstration of the Siphon Flush, then read about MAGNET’s new eco-SMART Manufacturing Program to see how your company can benefit. After about 100 refinements, the product begins shipping this month, and a dollar of every sale of the Siphon Flush is being donated to MAGNET’s Sustainable Product Innovation Fund. http://SiphonFlush.com

My Biggest Mistake & and How I Fixed It
Marcia Pledger
Orange Frazer Press, Inc.

The very best advice always comes from someone who’s “been there, done that.” Whether that person succeeded or maybe didn’t, the advice is still sound, and can help budding entrepreneurs avoid numerous pit-falls along the way to success. When small business/entrepreneur columnist Marcia Pledger started writing a column for Cleveland’s daily on the topic, she was able to convince local entrepreneurs to bare their business souls to her — explaining the ups and downs of succeeding in business. The most constant refrain was “I hope I don’t look stupid…”

Green Jobs for All?

On Monday, April 20th, representatives of the governor’s office and a number of elected officials gave an overflow crowd an update on the stimulus dollars coming into Ohio from Washington. Nothing turns out a crowd like the waving of some potential greenbacks — yeah, I was there too.

Much of the money is earmarked for “green” type projects, and the guru of green, Van Jones (whose seminal book The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems is fast becoming the bible of the nascent green movement) was recently tapped by president Obama to oversee this critical aspect of Americas resurgence…

The Very Best of the Whiskey Daredevils
Whiskey Daredevils
Knock Out Records

If you think you’ve heard this before, your confusion is easy to understand. And also quite intentional. With previous efforts The Whiskey Daredevils Greatest Hits, The Essential Whiskey Daredevils and Whiskey Daredevils Old Favorites coming in rapid succession, the confusion is understandable. But they’re all completely different records that belie their titles… and all good enough to be greatest hits packages. Suffice it to say the band’s tongue-in-cheek, cowpunk ethos and manic blend of blues-trash, surf music and rockabilly always stands up well…
