Cleveland’s Mourning [A] BLKstar Celebrates the Voting Rights Act in Music at the BOP STOP

Thu 11/9 @ 7PM

Voting doesn’t sound like a very exciting subject for an evening of music, but it’s something more people should get excited about, since it’s the gateway to every issue you might be passionate about. But that will be the subject of a performance at the BOP STOP by Cleveland quartet Mourning [A] BLKstar, as they perform music about the legacy and impact of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

That act was intended to help assure that states dominated by white nationalists and Ku Klux Klan members, and still seething about the Civil Rights Act of the previous year, would have a much harder time denying the vote to African-Americans. (Sadly, it was watered down in 2013 by conservatives on the Supreme Court who felt its time — and racism — had passed. Ha.)

The program is part of a series of events around a composition that Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland is commissioning from trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard called “re-vis-it.” The work will feature poetry by M[A]B founder/composer RA Washington.  These events are intended to share with Blanchard how the VRA affected Cleveland.  Admission is $10.
