Empowerment

Are we becoming more empowered as a city and a region? Listen to the inspiring State of the County speech by Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, just about a year after taking office. It should make anyone feel that we’re on the right track. And for Valentine’s Day, we’ve got a feature on “Love Is In The Air,” to benefit empowerment group Sister Girlfriends. Or check our listing of a carefully curated selection of V-Day happenings. And if college radio isn’t the last bastion of anti-establishment empowerment, we’re not sure what is: WJCU’s Radiothon kicks off this week.

We admit all is not chocolate & roses: the media machine known as LeBron continues to tease the CLE, but our own Larry Durstin sets the record straight. Come out to one of a number of clubs for Defend Music Night hosted by the Cleveland Music Club Coalition to seek repeal of the onerous admissions tax on small clubs. Empowerment doesn’t come knocking, you gotta go out and get it. But at least CoolCleveland can help. Download our free mobile app for your iPhone or Android and feel the power. –Thomas Mulready

Radiothon 2012
Helping College Radio Stay Alive

In many ways, college radio is the last bastion of anti-establishment media. Sure, the Internet is seemingly infinite and without boundaries, but for a second let’s forget about cyberspace and instead concentrate on the airwaves over Northeast Ohio.

Keeping the spirit of college radio alive for three decades is local legend Bill Peters, who once again is spearheading WJCU-FM 88.7’s Radiothon on Sat 2/11 and Fri 2/17Read more from John Benson here

A common lament of Black elected males hereabouts is they’re becoming an endangered species… over the years their numbers diminishing as they’re replaced by Black female officeholders.

The numbers differential certainly supports their whiny claim… and recent events in the race for county prosecutor perhaps explain why the male-to-female shift is taking place: Black female officeholders seem to have more integrity than their Black male counterparts…
