April Verch Fiddles, Sings and Step Dances Her Way to Oberlin’s Riverdog Gallery

Fri 3/2 @ 7:30PM

April Verch is one of those astonishing people who can do three things at once and do them well: sing, play the fiddle and step dance. Her skill is the product of both her family environment and her high-level musical training. She grew up surrounded by music as her father’s band played at dances in her native Ontario and of course she wanted to join in the fun, taking up fiddle and step dancing as a little girl.

As a teenager she began to win major competitions and attend workshops, and she went on to get a musical education at the noted Berklee College in Boston, giving her an even more solid foundation form which to interpret and build upon the traditional Franco-Celtic Canadian folk music of the Ottawa Valley.

So even though she’s still shy of 40, she has been recording for over 20 years with nine albums to her credit, enough material that she released The April Verch Anthology last year. That wasn’t the busy musician’s only album last year either. She also paired up with banjo player Joe Newberry for a duet album titled Going Home.

She’ll be performing at the gallery at Riverdog Retreat. Tickets are $17 at the gate, but the space is smaller than the summertime barn so you’d best call 440-965-8309 or email to reserve your space. Snacks, water and tea will be offered for free, and Lorenzo’s wood-fired pizza will be there selling pies for $9. But as always, you can bring your own cooler and picnic basket.
