Texas Troubadours Carry On the Lone Star State’s Quality Songwriting Tradition at the Kent Stage

Jimmie Dale Gilmore

Sun 3/4 @ 7:30PM

Texas is known for producing terrible politicians and astonishingly gifted songwriters. The Texas Troubadours tour builds on that reputation — the songwriters, not the politicians.

The three performers who comprise the tour are following in the footsteps of such legendary Texans as Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Joe Ely, Lyle Lovett, Jimmy LaFave, Robert Earl Keen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore …

Oh wait, the legendary 72-year-old Gilmore, who is still alive and kickin,’ IS one of the artists on the tour where he’ll be accompanied by two younger writers, both from an oft overlooked talent pool: women. And 54-year-old Ruthie Foster, a singer/guitarist known for her blues/soul/folk blend, is black to boot. Fiddler/vocalist Carrie Rodriguez is still younger, only 39, and the daughter of yet another noted Texas musician, the late David Rodriguez. In Texas, the parade of gifted songwriters goes on as far as the eye can see.

And you probably don’t need to be told that all three are based in the Texas cultural oasis of Austin, where musicians cross-fertilize and inspire each other. Just stay away from the statehouse!

The tour stops at the Kent Stage where tickets are $32-$47.
