Saving Lives
Cut through the fog and revel in the Super Button Box Bash at Euclid’s Slovenian Society Home; dig into the Edible Books Festival at Loganberry Books; be enthralled by sheep shearer Geoff Baldwin at the North Union Market; and immerse yourself in NEOSonicFest at venues all over town. CoolCleveland columnist Alex Sukhoy talks with filmmakers Lisa Klein and Doug Blush about their upcoming doc The S Word, using film and humor to save lives.
We’re endorsing candidates and issues in the important upcoming Primary Election on Tue 5/8, beginning with Nickie Antonio for State Senate in District 23. CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally questions why an RTA trustee has been serving since 1992. And CC columnist Mansfield Frazier suggests there are no easy, quick answers to saving lives in the black community if we’d rather spend more housing criminals in jails than on proven training programs. What do we think we’re saving for? –Thomas Mulready

There’s nothing quite like the Edible Books Festival which takes place every year on the first Saturday in April at Loganberry Books. Community members are invited to come up with an entry based on a book or literary theme – made from consumable materials.
That’s because after judging winners in several categories, attendees get to dig in and make those carefully crafted constructions disappear. John Benson talks to Loganberry owner Harriet Logan to find out what the heck this is all about. Sat 4/7.
SPONSORED: Single tickets for Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, presented by KeyBank, are now on sale! This year’s festival runs June 28-30, 2018 at Playhouse Square, and the lineup is smokin’. Make sure to get your tickets early so you don’t miss out on seeing your favorite artists, or buy a festival pass to really immerse yourself in the festival atmosphere. View our lineup and start planning your weekend today!
Filmmakers Lisa Klein and Doug Blush are bringing a new documentary film, The S Word, to this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival. Like their previous film Of Two Minds, which looked at bipolar disorder, it tackles an aspect of mental health – suicide.
Cleveland mental health advocate & comic Deena Nyer Mendlovitz was also involved with the film and is hosting a special event following the film’s first CIFF screening with Klein as her special guest. CoolCleveland’s Alex Sukhoy talks to all three to learn about the genesis of the film and how they hope it can make a difference. Thu 4/5 & Fri 4/6.
Lakewood’s Nickie Antonio, a tireless advocate for working people, public education, access to health care, LGBT rights and more, is term limited from the state House. So, as is common practice, she’s running for the State Senate.
But she’s being challenged in the May 8 primary (which determines the winner in the heavily Democratic District 23) by a state representative who is not term limited, has lukewarm interest in state policy, and was accused of sexual harassment. And shamefully, HE was endorsed by the county party. Why?
RTA trustee and board president George Dixon III announced his resignation last week. Allegations about failure to pay health care premiums have arisen against Dixon, who has served on the board since 1992.
CoolCleveland columnist Ellen Connally looks at the situation and suggests that, regardless of the truth of the allegations, that’s just too long for an individual to serve on a citizens’ board and that such a lengthy tenure is bound to compromise independence and objectivity and encourages coziness with those the board is tasked with overseeing.
Talespinner Children’s Theatre has made a huge impact on the local theater scene with its creative productions, based on myths and folktales from around the world, brought to colorful life with dance, movement, music, costumes, masks and puppets.
Its latest, The Oba Asks for a Mountain (A Tale of Nigeria), features a king intent on enriching himself by taking what belongs to others and a trio of young people who block him nonviolently. Hit too close to home? This play has a happy ending! Sat 4/7-Sun 4/29.

Melt in Lakewood is tearing it up! After 12 years, the original Melt location is undergoing major renovations. While keeping the same cool look and Lakewood charm, the space is being gutted and rebuilt as a new, modern Melt Bar and Grilled.
CoolCleveland’s Stephan Haluska met up with Melt’s owner and founder, Matt Fish on day one of the 26-day renovation. Some of the bigger modifications are a redesigned kitchen, new unisex restrooms, and a whole lot of cosmetic work in the dining room. Come check out the brand new look on Fri 4/27, for the grand reopening! In the meantime, you can always eat the same great food at Melt’s other Cleveland area locations in Avon, Independence and beyond.

What we in the black community must do is to frame solutions to the problems of crime we live with that actually can and will work and then strongly advocate for them to be implemented. But these are solutions that take time to implement…
