Why do we focus on the creative class each week in Cool Cleveland? Possibly because we think that engineers, designers, artists, entrepreneurs and artisans are the ones who made our region what it is, and will be the ones who will thrive in the 21st century. So we’re obsessed with people like Todd V, who is working on a new Digital Media Academy in Akron. Or Brian Bailey and Tim Hug of Massilon, who started Old Carolina Barbecue. Or Chef Zack Bruell, opening his 4th to-die-for restaurant in NEO on E. 4th Street. Or the fine kids of the Tri-C Rock Off. Or writers like Dr. Cornel West, visiting NEO this week, and our own Susan Petrone, who applied for a Creative Workforce Fellowship and lived to write about it. Or the guys in Blue Lunch, releasing a new disc this week and heading to the Intl Blue Challenge in Memphis. Hey, that’s not a bad graduating class right there. –Thomas Mulready

Visit Old Carolina Right Here in NEO
Authentic Taste from a Local Barbecue Master

My husband came home from work one cool winter evening all excited about the catered lunch in the office that day, from a new barbecue spot.

All I could think of was a messy chicken breast doused in a pint of sweet sauce and some greasy side dishes.

But, a few days later, he talked me into stopping by and picking up some of their signature, smoked meats for dinner. The restaurant was Old Carolina Barbecue, a hidden treasure that had just opened in our neighborhood right outside of Akron…

A Moment of Glory or Two
2010 Tri-C Rock Off

It is January and that means it is time for one of the great annual musical events here in Northern Ohio, the Tri-C Rock Off.

Now in it’s fourteenth year, the event lets local high school musicians and their bands have a moment of glory or two on the big stage at the House of Blues.

It is a three-step process to win the Rock Off. First, hundreds of bands submit videos and CDs to be picked to perform at the HOB.

Sixty-six bands are then selected to perform twenty-minute sets over three weekends.

Three bands from each night are invited back on February 6 to perform again, with a champion and several runner-ups chosen…

On Being An Also-Ran
Everything You Wanted to Know about the Creative Workforce Fellowships from Someone Who Didn’t Get One

The collective sigh you might have heard across Northeast Ohio on the evening of November 24 was likely that of 166 applicants to the second cycle of the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture’s (CPAC) Creative Workforce Fellowship learning the results of two days of panel deliberations.

At stake were 20 grants worth $20,000 each, as well as membership in the COSE Arts Network, a full tuition waiver for CPAC’s Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute, and inclusion in the publication of Fellows’ work. The stated purpose of the Creative Workforce Fellowship is to invest in developing and sustaining professional artists, establish a supportive environment for artists that nurtures creativity and innovation, and increase awareness of Cuyahoga County artists through their professional contributions within the creative workforce.

To the outside observer, that sounds very well and nice, but let’s be honest: the focus is on that 20 grand. It’s a lot of money…

Blue Lunch
Sideswiped
Wilberts Records

The guys in Blue Lunch have been playing the blues so long, either individually or as group, that their live shows almost become a lesson in blues music, showing influences from Chicago, New Orleans, Soul, 50’s Rock and Roll, and everything in between.

Their fifth release on Wilberts Records Sideswiped does the same thing, with fifteen solid tracks featuring Blue Lunch’s many styles and talents.

The disc includes seven originals and eight covers. Bob Frank, Pete London and company have you up and dancing on almost every track. The best of the originals include the title track, a great Memphis sound number; “All Things to Come,” one of their favorite live tunes; and “Don’t Point that Thing at Me.”

Amongst the covers are the R & B classic “Everyday will be Like a Holiday,” with great four part harmony on the chorus; and the album’s closer, a rowdy version of Doc Pomus’s “Too Much Boogie…”

“Real” County Reform
Plus, Historic Black Golf Course in Jeopardy

Anyone with an ounce of brains could have seen this one coming a mile away: Carping and complaining over real reform, especially when it hits in the wallet.

Here’s the deal: Sheriff Bob Reid wants to save the county millions of dollars by housing all county prisoners in his own lockup, rather than renting jail bed space from surrounding municipalities. Over the last decade the bill has been $60 million. Sounds reasonable, especially since the county jail isn’t overcrowded, right?

Hey, not so fast… the mayors of the suburbs that stand to lose money are now screaming. The simple fact is, catching and locking up petty criminals – say for having a roach in the ashtray – has been big business for cities and cops alike.

Not only do the municipalities make out by essentially running a flea-bag hotel (that we, the citizens are paying for with our tax dollars) but cops can make overtime by going back and forth to court on petty cases… again at taxpayer expense.

Cleveland, you don’t know how major Diane McIntyre is

What would be your most recent memory of the choreography of Dianne McIntyre? If you mostly limit yourself to concert dance as we do, you might remember McIntyre’s collaboration with Dancing Wheels, Sweet Radio Radicals. Regulars at the Cleveland Play House might remember her choreography for the play, Crowns, or her original dance driven dramas, I Can Stop on a Dime or Peaches Plums and Pontifications.

McIntyre’s calm, soft-spoken exterior belies the awesome achievement of this Cleveland native. Capsule bios typically cite her choreography for film, television, the Broadway and London stage, and for dance companies including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

But that leaves out her own dance company based in NYC in the 70’s, Sounds in Motion, and her innovative collaborations with important musicians. Again, capsule bios cite her numerous dance awards and grants, including the 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship, but often fail to mention her mentoring relationships with many who’ve become leaders in the performing arts.

Somehow, Cleveland, you don’t realize how major Dianne McIntyre is…
