The biggest question I get asked, besides “Are we cool enough to get into Cool Cleveland? is “What is Cleveland’s style?” Allow us to point out a few items you’ll find below that define Cleveland chic. Exhibit #1: with Fashion Week Cleveland, running thru this weekend, we’ve got the 3rd largest fashion week next to LA & NYC. Watch our video with founder Dr. Donald Shingler. Exhibit #2: Cavalier LeBron James, an Akron native, wins the NBA MVP, so we’ve got the best (and most authentic) basketball star. Exhibit #3: Michael Symon, owner of E. 4th’s Lola & Tremont’s Lolita, wins the James Beard award, making him the best chef in the Great Lakes. Congrats to our region’s superstars, but it doesn’t end there: a new annual event, the Big Cool Cats Music Festival kicks off in style on Sat 6/20 at Cain Park, and we’ve got a 2-4-1 discount, for a limited time. And there is some justice in NEO: community activist Ed Hauser is memorialized as Whiskey Island Drive becomes Ed Hauser Way. We interview Sylvia Pacifico who knows that Real Men Cook, and Nicole Hayes who spreads the word about the ICA. Find Cleveland chic when you click your mouse below. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland gets a new festival Throwing a much-deserved spotlight on Northeast Ohio’s awe-inspiring music scene, three Cleveland-area impresarios are kick-starting a new music festival: Steve Presser of Big Fun toy emporium on Coventry Rd. (and soon Clifton Avenue!), plus Thomas Mulready of Cool Cleveland, plus Denis Devito of the band Cats On Holiday, are presenting the Big Cool Cats Music Festival from noon to 11PM on Sat 6/20 at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. With 6 mainstage headliners, including the award-winning Magpies [pictured], this day-long bash also features acoustic unplugged acts in the Collondade between sets. Mark your calendar and get more information and 2-4-1 discount tickets (without surcharges) by using Discount Code BCC50 when you order online here: http://www.BigCoolCats.com

Nicole Hayes has one of the best-kept secret jobs in Cleveland. The Intermuseum Conservation Association is the oldest not-for-profit regional conservation center in the US, dedicated to the preservation of works of art and objects of cultural significance.

So what’s it doing on West 29th Street in Cleveland? And why do they have a shirt Elvis Presley wore in a famous photo shoot? And why are they talking about bugs? Cool Cleveland correspondent David Budin went there to find out. Watch the video as he talks to ICA’s education director Nicole Hayes about all of those things and more, including ICA’s free open house on Fri 5/8, in conjunction with Fashion Week Cleveland. http://www.ICA-ArtConservation.org

They still need 30+ women to join them to march, dance and sashay on Sat 6/13. “Age is no excuse; after all Marilyn would be 83 this year,” they tell us… and no worries on make-up — wigs, false eyelashes, blouses, blue eye shadow and red lipstick will be supplied! Where black is the color, where none is the number
– “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” Bob Dylan, 1963

By now, ex-sheriff Gerald T. McFaul has been accused of everything except being Jack the Ripper… but that might come later. However, the latest accusations deal with the “N” word. No, not that “N” word. This time the charge is nepotism. It now seems that the best way to become a deputy was to be a close friend or family member of McFaul’s. The only problem with that construct is that not many Blacks were close friends of McFaul’s, ergo, few deputies are Black…

Angel Eyes
Barbara Knight

Vocalist Barbara Knight graced the “Uniquely Cleveland” program delivered by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra last month with panache, pomp and circumstance. The jazz singer regularly delivers for the CJO (and in her own shows) with a warm, silky and inviting vocal delivery that has earned high praise by critics and fans alike. Her 14-tune set of “all-time favorites” called Angel Eyes may have the most clarity of purpose for any local jazz vocal release to date…

Opportunity, or Crime in Progress? A $350 Million Road
Plus: Propaganda by Propagandists and Sitting on $55 Million for the Med Mart

Cleveland Foundation and Gund Foundation push inequality again with two grants to the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) for a road to by-pass poverty. The game goes on. You pay because they say.

Let’s zip by those poor folk and get them to pay for it.

The two foundations, which often work in tandem, are giving the Greater Cleveland Partnership $200,000 over two years for Opportunity Corridor uses.

It’s a very, very expensive short road with a PR name to hide a deformed purpose. Can we credit Chris Roynane? I believe so…
