Burn

10.16-10.23.13
Burn

Here’s my idea: Let’s burn the Cuyahoga River. I know a fire artist from Berlin who we used to work with during Performance Art Festival, and he could do fire on a barge and hang fireballs from the Detroit-Superior Bridge. Then we build a museum dedicated to water quality on the banks of the Cuyahoga and commission an artist to build a permanent fire-on-water display. People would come from all over to watch the river burn every night at dusk.

In the meantime, we’re keeping the fires burning close to home: a retrospective of Randall Tiedman looks at the industrial spirit of CLE through the eyes of this North Collinwood painter. Natasha Turovsky installs her fourth massive mural on the Beck Center walls. Downtown Kent is haunted, there’s a full moon on Hinckley Lake, and you can drink & draw at the Rust Belt Monster Collective.

We review Oldboy, study questionable contracting practices, and suggest a bold transportation plan for the region. Clevelanders visit Grand Rapids, Trading Places teaches us about business, and Hotcards tries to break the record for full body burns. Looks like everyone’s keeping the flame alive. –Thomas Mulready

Genius Loci
Randall Tiedman & the Soul of Cle

Throughout history — before photography — major cities like Paris, London and Rome were defined by their painters. Their work provided local residents with civic pride and outsiders with an advertisement for the unique energy and character of that city.

Despite Cleveland’s impressive legacy of cultural achievement, few artists successfully captured its unique, industrial spirit. Perhaps the best was Randall Tiedman, whose work can be seen Fri 10/18

Three phenomena drew us to Grand Rapids, Michigan, as September turned into October, 2013. First, Artprize was on display with 1500 works in 200 venues around Downtown. Next, CEOs For Cities held their annual meeting there featuring Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, Brookings’ Bruce Katz (see our videos) and others. Finally, former Ohio Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher himself invited us. See his video, and the PHOTOSTREAM of Artprize here.

What would motivate 20 people to all light themselves on fire? Well, we asked some of them…

At the dedication of the 4th massive mural on the outer walls of the Beck Center for the Arts, Cool Cleveland talks with Montreal musician and artist Natasha Turovsky and gallerist Paul Sykes. Three of her murals are visible in the panoramic photo here.

With the four murals mounted around the Beck campus, observers are calling this Turovsky installation the largest outdoor mural museum in the world.

I’ve seen Trading Places more than any other movie, and that includes all the screenings of both Godfathers and Goodfellas combined.

From the moment I was a kid and first watched that comedy to a few years ago when I’d show it at the end of the semester to my film students to present day, not one other cinematic story, time and time again, has ever intrigued me, taught me or surprised me as much…

Cleveland is in desperate need of a mayor (or a leader at any level of city government) with a bold plan for the future of transportation in this city…

American roots music is enjoying a revival of sorts. Musicians are looking to the past and incorporating elements of traditional folk music into what they do.

Roots music has always endured on the fringes, but it has gained steam and popularity in recent years. Cleveland-based Oldboy has taken this idea and run with it…

The news that Cuyahoga County “will spend up to $250,000 to study its contracting practices” should be welcomed, if not for the fact the City of Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District have both commissioned similar disparity studies designed to verify if discrimination against women and minority-owned firms is occurring when the construction and contracting pies are being cut up hereabouts…

Something unusual is going on in Cleveland.

No, it’s not the revitalization of downtown or the development occurring in a few high-profile neighborhoods or a new approach to solving the problems of Cleveland schools or the perennial efforts to improve the performance and accountability of safety forces…

ROLDO: Bob Manry Crossed the Ocean Alone I remember this article when it first came out. At the time I was trying to promote my own children’s fairy tale-like book about Cleveland. While the Plain Dealer did an article about it, my business partner, (who in actuality had nothing to do with the writing of it) got all the credit, due to your using my father’s story to lambast the Plain Dealer….

Roldo: I’m old enough to remember the Manry story; for an 11-year-old, it was the ultimate high seas adventure…
