Besides the big time events outlined in The Waning Days of Summer, check our exclusive hand-picked listings for offbeat adventures: for the Blues, visit the secluded Mike’s Barn for Broadside of the Barn, or the star-studded Autism Benefit if you want the best Bluegrass, or maybe you’d rather see Hedwig’s transgendered glam rock, or the Samba sounds of the Brazilian Fest, or the Cle Peace Show on Labor Day as an alternative. We make tracks with Olympic champ Diana Munz, Roldo tracks the news, and Mansfield tracks down MJ’s real killer. If you’re like most of our readers (see Top 5), you’ll be reading the latest installment of Sixth City, this one firing a warning shot over the East Bank of the Flats. Hail, Cleveland! –Thomas Mulready

VisionQuest
Phase 2: East Bank of the Flats

My high school wrestling coach used to say, “The day I stop yelling at you is the day I stop caring about you.” With that in mind, come on Cleveland. Seriously, what was the strategy behind pumping millions of dollars into the revitalization of Warehouse District? Then not developing some of the city’s best property attached to the Warehouse District?

Thankfully there’s now a project slated to overhaul the East Bank. It looks amazing. There’s ton of good stuff in this project essential to a Waterfront. There’s a riverside park, residences with balconies, roof gardens, and a hotel. Plus, a movie theater, entertainment complex, office buildings, and an underrated key aspect of transforming into a major city; a downtown market.

Problem is the new Flats East Bank is slated to open next summer but it doesn’t even look like construction has started. I’m also scared about some of the words that are being tossed around on the master plans.

Things like galleries, boutiques, specialty shops, European inspired hotel, Class A office buildings, and corporate headquarters are not comforting…

Who Killed Michael Jackson?

There’s a better than even chance that Dr. Conrad Murray may go to prison for the death of Michael Jackson.

This is What Passes As News Today
Plus, Dr. Spock and National Health Care

I’ve been stirring memories as I look through memorabilia as I near 50 years of news reporting. I came across two long interviews with Dr. Benjamin Spock from 1967.

Much of it dealt with his anti-war activity. I asked him naturally about the opposition he encountered over his anti-Vietnam positions. But I also asked him, “Did you take much abuse over your Medicare stand?”

I don’t remember the nature of his position but his response reveals even today the bitterness in the fight for health care reform…
