Performance

Performance

Performance art is all around. You’ll probably see some at the Hessler Street Fair and the Asian Festival. 25 years ago around this time, we initiated the Performance Art Festival, and this Friday, the Galleries at CSU will open a show screening some videos we edited from the 1000 performance artists we presented over 12 years. I would highly recommend checking it out.

You should also check out the new Rhododendron Discovery Garden at Holden Arboretum; we shot a video to give you a sneak peek. And another to give you a peek at Dan Moulthrop as he starts his new gig at The City Club, as they start their second 100 years. And I thought 25 was a long time.

This week we welcome Bootsy Collins, and Horriblefest, and the Steeldrivers and the Sauce Boss. Get educated on soil building, write about your rust belt, indulge in gardening mania, pedal for prizes, Bike for Beck. Alex bares her soul, Mansfield bares his knuckles, and no doubt some performance artist will bare it all. That’s quite a performance, Cleveland. –Thomas Mulready

In a way, it’s a logical, if courageous move, for the City Club of Cleveland. They’ve named Dan Moulthroup their new CEO, and opened the door to their next 100 years.

Listen to this interview of the consummate interviewer, complete with our notes flying in the wind.

“It’s a beautiful institution: a place where people come to share ideas, and to question one another about those ideas, and do it while you break bread: it’s universal, it’s human, it’s perfect.”

For Holden Arboretum, and for our region, this is big. This is a tree museum, after all, with one of the Top 5 woody leaf collections in the country.

Watch the video interview with Holden president & CEO Clem Hamilton, from the very center of their new Rhododendron Discovery Garden, their first major renovation in 10 years.

They’ve installed three “nodes” designed to educate visitors: 1) the diversity of rhododendrons and the 1000 species on view; 2) hybridizing and cultivating new varieties; 3) how to grow rhododendrons at home in your own garden.

Their New Leaf Master Plan sees Holden dedicating a Tree Alley, renovating Corning Lake, building a deer fence, constructing an exciting 60-foot tall Canopy Walk over a huge ravine, and eventually, a new Visitors Center.

The Rhododendron Discovery Garden will officially open on Fri 5/18, free to the public from 11AM-4PM, followed by their cool event Rhodies After Dark, with live jazz, hors d’oeuvres, drinks and fireworks.

The dogs might have been howling on the West Side, but they weren’t happy.

The SOBs (Symphony, Operas and Ballets) were on their knees and Joshua Smith, the upstart principal flutist from The Cleveland Orchestra tried bringing his orchestra buddies to play a gig at the Happy Dog, at the edge of the nascent Gordon Square Arts District.

A real bar band gig, like countless bands in nameless bars around the world, but this one wanted to play classical music for a crowd busy with beer and gourmet hot dogs. Social media had kicked in and lines formed around the block. But it wasn’t working. The Mozart & Schubert sounded like “elevator music,” according to Smith, and worse, it felt like another lame attempt to “broaden the audience” for classical music.

But Smith and Happy Dog co-owner Sean Watterson didn’t give up… Read the review by Thomas Mulready here

REVIEW: NWT Reimagines Jacques Brel on Psychotropics

Come out of your fog, Cleveland. Near West Theatre has updated Jacques Brel so thoroughly that you can leave your foggy memories behind.

Near West Theatre has turned the cozy little 4-person cabaret romp into a full-blown apocalyptic nightmare, an existentialist atomic explosion, complete with a 34-member cast, fog machines, weapons of mass destruction, dozens of dead bodies, mothers wailing, authentic queers and phony virgins, cross-dressers, desperate homeless vagabonds, naked bodies covered by the merest Army towels, Phil Spector girl groups, heroin addicts, and a drug-induced screenplay-like adaptation straight out of the spectacularly failed Beatles movie Magical Mystery Tour.

All just as Jacques Brel himself would have countenanced… Read the review by Thomas Mulready here
