Impact

Tue 7/19-Thu 7/21

Let the Republicans talk about whatever Republicans are talking about these days. While they’re meeting at the Q downtown, another group of people will spend three days at Oliver Institutional Baptist Church a few miles to the east at Impact 2016, a public policy and social action forum.

Co-chaired by the church’s pastor the Rev. Dr. Jawanza Karriem Colvin (pictured) and former state senator Nina Turner, the event will be focused on getting people involved in bringing about progressive social change. It aims to inspire organizing action to impact the 2016 election and beyond, inform voters about issues affecting struggling communities and get people engaged in dialogue about how to get mass participation a accomplish progressive goals.

There’ll be panel discussions on topics such as income inequality, the assault on voting rights, reforming the criminal justice system, the Obama legacy, and reflections on the civil rights movement, with a host of illustrious and knowledgeable local speakers. The PBS documentary about the Freedom Riders will screen each day, and evening keynotes and book signing sessions will feature Dr. Eddie Glaude, chair of the department of religion at Princeton (Tuesday) and Dr. Cornel West of NYC’s Union Theological Seminary (Wednesday).
