In addition to numerous free outdoor concert series that started back in June or even late May, there are a few just kicking off to add some fun to the waning days of summer (The Akron Art Museum’s annual Downtown@Dusk doesn’t start until NEXT week this year, undoubtedly due to the construction of its new garden).

On of those is the Beck Center for the Arts’ Red Stage Summer Music Series. As with most such events, music is the centerpiece but not the whole deal — there will also be refreshments available and interactive arts activities.

On the stage on the front lawn and patio of Beck this week, you can hear local vocalist Ki Allen (pictured) with her quartet of area jazz veterans: bassist Peter Dominguez, guitarist Bob Fraser and drummer Ron Godale. Allen’s known for her appearances at jazz venues, but she’s adapt at handling blues, R&B and pop as well.

The series continues with self-contained indie artists Uno Lady and Mike Uva (Wed 8/10), each of whom has a distinctive low-key, lo-fi approach to music. The acoustic Americana duo Boy = Girl, featuring Mo’Mojo’s Jen Maurer and folksinger/guitarist Paul Kovach performs on Wed 8/24. The series concludes on Wed 9/7 with Latin ensemble Ahi-Nama who brings together various styles of dance music from across the Caribbean region.
