Cleveland photographer Herb Ascherman is known for taking on projects over his 40 years as a professional that push the boundaries of his skills. One of those was starting to work in the antique platinum process, with its distinctive depth and tonal range.

It was the beauty of that work that led to him being commissioned by the current owner of the Salmon Halle House in Shaker Heights, which had been recently renovated, to shoot the house and grounds over many seasons in all types of weathr and light.

“I produced over 350 8 x 10 black and white negatives of the House and property, of which a formal portfolio of 60 platinum photographs was presented to the owners at the project’s end,” he says. “To be respected, to be allowed to photograph without oversight or hindrance, to be given free reign to explore a private park and to enjoy the elegant solitude of a manor well cared for; what better inspiration.”

Platinum Prints of the Halle House has been on display at the Shaker Historical Society since May. There’s a closing reception tonight, one more chance to see this exquisite work and meet the photographer. It’s free but they’re asking that visitors call the historical society at 216-921-1201 to make a reservation.
