Jim Obergefell Tells the Marriage Equality Story at Loganberry Books

Obergefell

Cincinnati’s Jim Obergefell didn’t plan on becoming a household name in the LGBT community or a part of American legal history. All he wanted was to be acknowledged as the surviving spouse on his partner John Arthur’s death certificate after Arthur died of Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2012 after the two married in Maryland, since same-sex marriage wasn’t legal in Ohio.

But when the administration of Governor John Kasich and Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine decided to impose their own values on others and deny his request, the case ended up in the U.S. Supreme Court where it became Obergefell vs Hodges, which, on Friday June 26, 2015, made marriage equality the law in all 50 states.

Since then he has been feted and honored and invited to speak at numerous venues, and he has done so, carrying word of his fight and his victory to inspire others. He’s co-written a book called Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality which tells the story of how his case came together and ended up making life better and more secure for all same-sex couples. He’s currently out and about promoting it. That’s what brings him to Larchmere’s Loganberry Books in an event sponsored by Equality Ohio where he’s talk about his book and sign copies.
