Although the six-musician band Innov Gnawa is based in New York City all the players have roots in different parts of Morocco. Formed two years ago by Samir Langus from Agadir and featuring master musician Maalem Hassan BenJaafer from Fez, the group works in the country’s folk gnawa tradition, a form of ritual trance music originating in Morocco’s black communities and performed on instruments that are unique to the genre. Innov Gnawa draws on those traditional forms, adding African and Latin percussion for a distinctive approach.

The band will perform for the final Ohio City Stages concert of the season on the stage at the corner of W. 29th and Church, in front of the Transformer Station. Look for food trucks and a beer tent. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy some exotic free music.
