Dobama Presents the Best of Its Kids’ Playwriting Fest at Cain Park

Kids Dobama

Wed 7/20 @ noon

The Dobama Theatre has been presenting its annual Marilyn Bianchi Kids’ Playwriting Festival, named after one of the co-founders of the theater, for nearly four decades, giving children a chance to try their hand at writing for the stage and perhaps seeing their work performed by real actors.

To raise money for next year’s festival, which will be the 39th, Dobama is presenting the Best of the Fest at Cain Park’s Alma Theatre. Family activities, including games, crafts and refreshments, start at noon with the first of the seven plays on tap starting at 1pm.

They include three plays from this year’s winning playwrights: Cleveland Heights Roxboro Elementary School 4th grader Ruby Tugeau (The Circus Pilot); Shaker Heights Onaway Elementary School 4th grader Christian Mosley (Pizza Play); and Cleveland Heights Boulevard Elementary School 5th grader Harrison Vandall (Attack of the Village).

The afternoon will also feature plays from past years: The Happy Book which won the first fest in 1979; Chickens on Strike from 1985; Tut in Time Travel from 1987; and Guess Who’s Going to Be Dinner? from 1989. Wonder if the once-young playwrights will be too embarrassed to show up?

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for kids.
