Operatic

Our mouths are wide open and beautiful sounds fill the air.

Whether we’re shouting at the top of our lungs about our burgeoning small-batch craft brew scene, or singing the praises of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath, or just grinding it out with CLE noise-rockers Murderedman at Now That’s Class, we’ve certainly learned how to toot our own horn.

From PechaKucha at the City Club to the Laughter League at Blank Canvas, to the 10th anniversary of BAYcrafters, to Burlesque at the Bevy, to MOCA’s Myopia Art School, to Bike & Brew at the Akron Farm & Flea, our CoolNEIGHBORHOODS are humming along. Not seeing your business or cool neighborhood listed? You know what to do. Getting ready for visitors? Don’t forget to send them to our site and apps for the best guide to the region. And we ain’t just whistling, Dixie.

Lakewood is melting down, Coventry is honoring Harvey Pekar, they’re tasting in Tremont, and Cleveland Peace Action is preparing for RNC protesters. Apparently we’re not the only ones singing around here. –Thomas Mulready

Lucco chats with CoolCleveland’s Kendall Embrescia-Hridel about PetFix’s future plans and their upcoming, informal benefit, Sips for Snips, at Madison’s Debonne Vineyards. Sun 7/10.

Clevelanders in general lean blue and many are taking a cynical view of the upcoming Republican National Convention. But one thing Cllevelanders embrace wholeheartedly is beer – especially its burgeoning small-batch craft brew scene.

And many of those enterprising brewers aren’t letting any opportunity to create a new brew pass them by. They’re concocting patriotic-themed politically themed beers, and Heinen’s is hosting a party where you can taste some of them. Writer Cynthia Schuster Eakin fills us in. Sun 7/9.

Although Ohio Light Opera in Wooster is staging some unfamiliar musicals this season – five of the seven are premieres for the summer stock theater – they were written by some impeccable names such as Kern, Kalman and Ivor Novello (pictured) who was a giant of British theater in the first half of the 20th century.

Novello’s The Dancing Years involves a couple in Vienna who get separated for years, with the Nazi regime hovering as a threat in the background. It was a huge hit in England in the early years of WW II. That show and the others run in repertory through Sat 8/13.

There’s a big buzz around virtual reality right now, which gained steam a couple of years ago when Facebook paid $2 billion for headset company Oculus. Could Cleveland be a major player in this fledging field?

The folks over at Goldfarb Weber Creative media believe it can. They’re already dabbling in the technology for trade shows and see possibilities for use in the medical field, as well as sports – the Cavs have invested heavily in VR. Goldfarb Weber art director/senior editor Kyle Stanley talks with John Benson who shares with us the company’s thoughts on how this could all unfold.
