The organization Independent We Stand supports independently owned business across the country and promotes buying local. Right now, it’s holding its American Main Street contest to promote the viability and charm of walkable storefront business districts over big box stores surrounded by acres of parking lot.

This week it announced its 25 quarterfinalists, and one of them is right here in northeast Ohio — Cleveland Heights’ Cedar Lee district, which features dozens of diverse shops, eating establishments and bars, along with such amenities as the Cedar Lee Theatre, the Dobama Theater, Heights Arts, and the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Library main branch.

The grand prize winner, decided by online votes, will get $25,000 to be used to enhance the winning district. Cedar Lee plans to use it on pilot programs to fill vacant storefronts. The winner will be announced June 3. To help out by voting for Cedar Lee (through May 29), go here.
