Race for the place

6/5 @ 9AM

On June 5, thousands of people throughout the Northeast Ohio area will head to Beachwood Place for the Gathering Place’s 16th annual Race for the Place. In celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day®, participants can help raise funds to support those touched by cancer in Cleveland’s local communities. The event offers a one mile and chip-timed 5K for both walkers and runners alike.

“As our biggest fundraiser for the year, the Race for the Place brings the community together to support everyone who walks through our doors as they face the issues that arise from being touched by cancer,” said Eileen Saffran, chief executive officer of the Gathering Place. “We’re truly grateful for the passion, determination and drive of our community and sponsors who support the race.

Race for the Place is expected to draw over 4,000 participants and net $395,000 in proceeds, which will help fund the free services offered by the Gathering Place, including support groups, programming for children and teens, art therapy, nutrition and exercise classes, lectures, lending libraries, the HairPeace Wig Salons and more. Over its 16-year history, the annual event has raised over $2 million for the Gathering Place and those touched by cancer.

The race is on rain or shine, starting at 9am on the upper level parking deck between Nordstrom and Dillard’s at Beachwood Place. Race day registration begins at 7:30am. A National Cancer Survivors Day ceremony will be emceed by WKYC evening news anchor and senior health correspondent Monica Robins and Jim Donovan beginning at 8:45am. A number of family activities including face painting, games, music and more will be held in Celebration Village starting at 8am.

Following the race, an award ceremony will take place at 10:15am, recognizing the teams with the most members and those that raised the most money in five categories: corporate, community, school, health/fitness and new team.
