Folksinger David G. Smith has been around. Originally from Iowa, he started playing music in college, then landed in Colorado for a decade playing with several different ensembles. He made the typical move to Nashville for a while before moving back to his home state where he formed another band, and developed a songwriting style fueled by his experiences as a medical investigator, dealing with people in tough situations. Then he spent more time in Nashville developing his ability to turn those experiences into effective songs.

Working in Nashville had a not-uncommon downside though. As he says in his bio,  “I started losing my soul writing material that didn’t speak to me in the name of writing songs for others to sing.  It was an insidious process and eventually the muse was not showing up and I didn’t know why.”

He regained it when he took the advice of some experienced writers to stop trying to catch the Nashville golden ring. That led to the late-career release of his first full-length album Non-Fiction in 2011. Since then he’s released two more, One House, in 2014, and his new First Love, along with some EPs. He’s on the road again, bringing his intimate songs to intimate venues such as the Barking Spider Tavern at University Circle, where he’ll perform an afternoon show. There’s no cover; they pass the hat for the performers.
