It’s safe to say that most music lovers were blindsided by the death of pop/rock/R&B icon Prince, who was only 57. His prolific career is too lengthy to recount but it was clear when he released his 1978 debut For You, on which the 19-year-old musician did everything himself with the exception of a co-writer on one tune, that here was an exceptional talent.

So in the wake of the spate of tributes to David Bowie, whose death at 69 after a long illness was less surprising, we’ll surely be seeing as many Prince tributes. The Phantasy Concert Club has one this weekend where DJs Tim Smith and Guy Wire will spin Prince’s music and show his hypnotic videos. There’ll also be free purple appetizers and a purple cake, paying tribute to the color he was associated with. Addicted Body Arts is sponsoring the evening and giving away a free certificate for a tattoo. Admission is $3 for 21 and over; $5 for 18-20.
