‘Power of the Tower’ Showcases Artists Who Work at the Tower Press Building

Fri 6/3 @ 5-9PM

One of Cleveland’s oldest artist neighborhoods is the area around Superior just west of AsiaTown and north of the Cleveland State campus. That’s why it was branded the “Art Quarter” or “QuARTer Arts District,” although the name hasn’t really stuck. But the former industrial buildings in the area have long housed artist studios and live/work spaces.

One of these is the restored Tower Press Building, originally built in 1907 as a clothing manufacturer. It’s now home and/or workplace for some of the area’s most talented artists. That’s why they’re again joining forces for a group exhibition, this time in the light-drenched Wooltex Gallery at the front of the building.

Tower of the Power features the work of 16 artists, curated by another noted Cleveland artist, painter Douglas Max Utter who is now after all these years “rebranding” himself as “DM Utter” according to the show’s press release. (He did the event illustration above). The artists participating — who include painters, printmakers, photographers and filmmakers — are Robert Banks, John Davis, William Gould, Michael Greenwald, Katrice Headd, William Martin Jean, Anne Kibbe, Michael Levy, Erica Miller, Dan Morgan, Scott Murphy, Billy Nainiger, Eric Rippert, Christopher Stofan, Damian Venditti and JenMarie Zeleznak.

At the opening reception “DM Utter” will give a brief curator talk at 6:30 and there will be film and performance by artists from the building, music spun by DJ SupermanLover, and jazz rock harp by Kristy Kline. Light food and drinks will be available and the Papa Nicks Calzone Zone food truck will be parked outside for those who want something more substantial. The show will be on view through Mon 7/4.
