Pioneering British Folk Rock Ensemble the Strawbs Brings Their 50 Years of Music to the Music Box

Strawbs

Tue 5/24 @ 8PM

The Strawbs were one of the key bands of the late ’60s/early ’70s British traditionalist folk revival. With guitarist, vocalist and co-founding member Dave Cousins consistently leading the ensemble as other members have come and gone, the band has persisted for more than 50 years (they were founded in 1964 and released their debut album in 1969) save for a short hiatus in the early ’80s, stretching its wings into both acoustic and electric music and even a little prog rock.

It’s not like Cousins just grabbed a bunch of new musicianc and called it the Strawbs though. With the exception of keyboard player Dave Bainbridge of Celtic band Iona, who’s joining them just for the current tour, all the current members — drummer Tony Fernandez, guitarist Dave Lambert and bassist Chas Cronk — are veterans of the ’70s Strawbs.

The group is coming to the Music Box Supper Club on their Hero & Heroine tour, a reference to the group’s much admired 1974 album of that name which they’ll play in its entirety, along with many of their best-known tunes. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door.
