Peace at the Pub Features Peace Ship Activist AJ Oliver

PeaceAtThePub

Tue 5/10 @ 7PM

The monthly Peace at the Pub programs, sponsored by Cleveland Peace Action, give local peace activists the opportunity to get together to both socialize and learn something. This month the program, taking place as usual at the Market Garden Brewery, features Dr. AJ “Skip” Oliver, a retired professor from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, who has been involved in the Peace Ship project.

That project was started by the Veterans for Peace group, who found and rebuilt the Golden Rule, a ship that in 1958 set sail to for a nuclear test zone in the Pacific to try to stop the testing. Although it never arrived and the crew were arrested and jailed in Hawaii, the public attention it ignited led to a test ban treaty in 1963.

Oliver is a member of the project’s committee and has sailed as a crew member. He’ll tell stories of the voyage, and there’ll be a pub quiz with prizes, food and of course, locally made beer will be available at the bar. The program is free and open to all.
