Everyone in the art community knows Hilary Gent. She’s the owner of HEDGE Gallery at the 78th Street Studios, which represents some of the area’s best artists. She’s also an event coordinator who puts together many of the special affairs at 78th Street’s event spaces. And most know that she is also a talented painter with a strong interest in evocative landscape painting; her work is usually hanging in one of 78th Street’s corridors.

Now she’ll have a show all to herself at the Maria Neil Art Project on Waterloo Road. In Properties of Water, she explores the changing aspects of water, both physical and emotional.

“It is still and reflective, active and energized, wild and chaotic,” she says in her artist statement. “Water has the ability to calm or destroy. Painting water can be compared to trying to capture the spirit of something. My hope is that if I can paint a simple glimmer of light or a distorted reflection, a quick ripple or the existence of life beneath its surface, I will have effectively translated a piece of the water’s story.”

The show opens with a reception from 5-10pm during this month’s Walk All Over Waterloo and runs through 6/17. It’s free and open to the public.
