Houston-based photographer Keliy Anderson-Staley specializes in vintage processes such as ambrotypes and wet-plate collodion tintypes. Her recent project, [Hyphen] Americans, comprises more than 130 tintype portraits made in the last seven years of a large cross-section of American faces. A selection of them will go on display at the Society for Photographic Education (SPE).

“The sitters, identified only by a first name, defiantly assert his or her self-hood, staring back at the viewer with a bold penetrating intensity,” says the release for the show. “The milky, almost haunting, looking surfaces of her tintypes elicit timelessness despite their contemporary context. Anderson-Staley’s sitters become detached from time, effectively redefining assumptions we may hold due to perceived identity politics.”

In addition, for those interested in delving into her process, she’ll be hosting workshops and demonstrations in the wet-plate collodion process while she’s in town for her opening on Sat 5/14 and Sun 5/15.
