Thumbscrew features three musicians deeply involved in the avant-garde jazz scene in New York. Guitarist Mary Halvorsen, double bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Tomas Fujiwara stretch their musician muscles playing in numerous challenging ensembles. As self-described “cooperative trio” Thumbscrew, formed in 2011, they “make inviting music full of wonder and discovery from creative catalysts on jazz’s adventurous frontiers.”

Their collaboration features a sort of delicate balance between the players in which each composes and takes the lead at different points.

“It really is a three composer trio, and all of our tunes have our basic aesthetics attached,” says Formanek. “But we want everybody to have input. Nobody’s afraid to make a decision. It’s one of the first coops I’ve been in where everyone’s really willing to take control at any given moment.”

The group’s self-titled debut in 2014 earned widespread praise and they were named Downbeat’s Rising Star band in 2014 and 2015. Their sophomore album Convallaria has just come out, just in time for a tour which brings them to the BOP STOP in a co-production with New Ghosts. Admission is $15.
