Go on an Electro-Acoustic Improvisational Journey at SPACES Gallery

Emprise

Sat 5/21 @ 8PM

Emprise is an evening of adventurous electro-acoustic performances, curated by Lisa Miralia, one of Cleveland’s most dedicated practitioners of and advocates for cutting-edge sonic explorations.

This show, taking place at SPACES Gallery, will feature sound artists from northeast Ohio as well as Seattle, starting with 95-year-old Kent resident and retired KSU faculty member Halim El-Dabh. The Egyptian musician/composer arrived here with an already formidable reputation for his pioneering work with electronics in music in the ’40s and ’50s. He’ll perform as a kalimba/electronics duo with Kent’s Ron Slabe, who has been performing in various sound art projects and composing, doing sound design for theater, dance, and performance art, since the late ’70s. They’ll be celebrating an album release.

The evening will open with an electronic set by performance artist/sound artist/slam poet Ann B. Clorox (Kristen Ban Drake), who uses voice, analog synthesizers and other electro-acoustic instruments in her work. She’ll be followed by artist in residence at the University of Washington’s school of music Greg Sinibaldi’s EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) Project, which utilizes custom software designed and built by Sinibaldi to explore the interaction of the human body with electronic sound environments.

After intermission, there’ll be a multi-instrumental improvisational set by the quartet Untie the Knots, an ensemble of Kent and Cleveland musicians (including members of the Trepanning Trio) organized for this event. They’ll improvise using guitar, percussion, melodicas, saxes, flute, bass, bansuri, accordion, recorder, udu and other sound production sources. El-Dabh and Slabe close the night unless …. if there’s still time, most of the performers will get together for a group improvisation session.

It’s a $10 cash donation at the door, all of which goes to the performers.
