Eagles Songwriter JD Souther Makes a Return Visit to the Kent Stage

Thu 5/26 @ 8PM

Singer/songwriter JD Souther isn’t all that well known, but a lot of his songs are. As an integral part of the Southern California soft rock scene in the ’70s, he wrote or co-wrote a lot of very familiar tunes, including the Eagles’ “Heartache Tonight,” “New Kid in Town” and “Best of My Love,” Don Henley’s “Heart of the Matter,” James Taylor’s “Her Town Too,” and ten tunes recorded by Linda Ronstadt, including “Hasten Down the Wind” and “Prisoner in Disguise.”

He began his solo career with 1971’s John David Souther at a time when earnest, thoughtful singer/songwriters like Jackson Brown, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Carole King were breaking out all over the place. It didn’t happen for him though, and he spent a couple of years in Souther/Hillmann/Furay with Chris Hilman of the Byrds and Rchie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Returning to his solo efforts, he had his only major hit under his own name was 1979’s “You’re Only Lonely.”

Souther released only one album in the ’80s, 1984’s Home by Dawn, did more writing with the Eagles’ Don Henley and effectively retired from making him own music, living off his royalties for nearly 25 years. He returned to the fray with 2008’s If The World Was You, and released a new album of new material, Tenderness, in May. He’s also recently reissued some of his solo material.

He’ll be returning to the Kent Stage, where he played last fall, to perform material from his entire career. Tickets are $25-$35.
