One of the criteria for getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is supposedly influence (supposedly — sometimes it’s hard to tell). If that’s true, it’s hard to think of two bands more deserving than Deep Purple, inducted this year, about two decades overdue, and Alice in Chains (pictured), whose first year of eligibility was last year. The former were one of the lynchpins of the heavy metal genre in the last ’60s and early-mid ’70s; the latter were the key link between grunge and nu metal, the band every heavy act was aping in the mid-late ’90s and beyond.

Jerry Cantrell co-founded AiC with the late Layne Staley, whose well known drug addiction (which eventually killed him) prevented the band from touring extensively and opened the door for the copycats. (They’re back on track now with a new singer). Glenn Hughes did a short stint in Deep Purple from 1973-1976, contributing to three albums and numerous tours in the wake of the band’s huge success with 1972’s Machine Head.

Cantrell and Hughes will share the stage at the Rock Hall when they come to town for the SoundExchange Influencers interview series where they’ll talk about the impact their bands still have on today’s music. Tickets are $10.
