It’s hard to believe there was a time when you had to scour the landscape to find evidence of a comedy scene; you mostly had to content yourself with touring comics at clubs like the Improv and an occasional big-name comic performing at PlayhouseSquare.
Now there’s an embarrassment of riches, with plenty of opportunities for local and regional up-and-coming performers of all types to hone their acts in front of eager audiences. Case in point: The Crooked River Comedy Festival, which debuts this weekend at Lakewood’s Bevy inbirdtown. It features two full nights of both standup and improv comedy — almost 20 altogether — mostly from around the region (Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh) but also a pair of improv ensembles from Boston, including Bear Eats Cow, pictured above.
There are also workshops on Saturday afternoon for beginners interested in picking up tips from more experienced performers or experienced performers just looking for new inspiration.
Single-night tickets are $15, or if you’ve got the stamina and interest, do both nights for $25. The workshops are $25.
