The Collinwood Farm & Flea Makes Its Debut at Cavotta’s Garden Center

Cavotta’s Garden Center in Collinwood is one of the area’s heritage businesses. It was started back in the 1930s by the grandparents of current owner Angela Cavotta, who, in just the last several years, has grown the business exponentially. She’s added greenhouses, bought surrounding land and each year increases the plants — flowers, bushes, herbs and especially vegetables such as the more than 100 heirloom tomato varieties she grows from seed — that she offers to customers. Garden statuary and vintage outdoor furniture are another speciality, and kids love to hang out and watch her goats, rabbits and chickens.

Last year, she started a farm/flea market on a biweekly basis in her parking lot. This year, she’s grown that event into what she’s formally dubbed the Collinwood Farm and Flea. It will be weekly and take place in an enclosed space in the back and feature music and ready-to-eat food as well. She’s been soliciting local makers and bakers and growers to offer their wares — including homemade and homegrown food products, collectibles, vintage goods and handmade crafts.

It kicks off this week — not coincidentally a good time to start thinking about what kinds of heirloom tomatoes you might want to put in YOUR garden — and continues through October. The Motor Mouth food truck will be there to provide nourishment and the Craic Brothers will be playing acoustic Irish music from 11am-2pm.
