Playwrights Local 4181 was founded to encourage local playwrights by presenting new plays written by both beginning and experienced dramatists from the area and by hosting workshops where they can share their work and learn from each other.

The group is now offering its first annual Play Lab and Spring Workshop series..

“Our first Play Lab teams playwrights with dramaturgs and directors for three days of in-depth work on scripts in progress,” explains the group’s artistic director David Todd.

Works by playwrights Nivi Engineer, Amy Schwabaue, Claire Robinson May and others will be read on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, while workshops will be led by area dramatists as well as associate professor of theater at The Ohio State University, Jennifer Schlueter.

The festival will also include a workshop for young dramatists ages 9-13, classes co-hosted with the Dramatist Guild and receptions following the workshops on Friday and Saturday nights, giving attendees a chance to socialize and get to know each other better. The festival takes place in the Creative Space at Waterloo Arts. Get more information and egister at playwrightslocal.org/springplaylab/

All the events are free, although there’s an $8 suggested donation, and you are, of course, welcome to give more to support the work of the nonprofit organization.
