It’s prom season. And no one has more fun than the folks at Get Hep Swing and their followers. There’s no popularity contest or teen heartbreak at stake at their Swing Prom — everybody has fun and there are no wallflowers. Dress up in whatever era prom gear or costume you like and come on down – with a date, by yourself or with all your friends.
The evening starts with a dance lesson from Get Hep founder Valerie Salstrom from 8-9pm to teach beginners the basic moves and show advanced dancers some new tricks. At 9pm, the True North Big Band takes the stage and there’s dancing to live music until midnight. No one turns into a pumpkin either. There’s lots of partner swapping and you’ll get to meet new friends and dancers on all levels of expertise. On top of that, the crowd will vote on who gets to be the new Swing King and Swing Queen.
It all takes place at the Slovenian Workmen’s Home on Waterloo Road, where there is a well-stocked bar to keep your whistle wet. Admission is only $12 — pay at the the door; there’s no formality here, just fun.
