We’re all honorary Slovenians around here, and this weekend, we get to celebrate Kurentovanje, the Slovenian Mardi Gras. Musicians are scrambling to form new bands, write songs & rehearse for the Lottery League’s Big Show. FrozenFest at Geauge Park District might be a bit soggy this year, but that won’t stop us. Cast out of Jerusalem, cast out of Spain, the Spanish Jews have been scrambling for what seems like forever- Apollo’s Fire, hot on the heels of international applause, reprises Sephardic Journey in four corners of the region this weekend.

Jazz giant Joe Hunter kicks off a new Wednesday series, Kid Cudi returns to his homeytown, TCO goes French, Hey Mavis folk-rocks the G.A.R. Hall, and Dominque Morisseau’s Detroit 67 opens at Karamu. Cleveland Peace Action invites you to the Islamic Center of Cleveland in Parma, the Jazz Heritage Orchestra salutes Count Basie at the BOP STOP, there’s polka music, pierogies and pivo to celebrate Paczki Day in Parma, and it’s “Partigras” time at Packy Malley’s on Waterloo. That’s not as much of a stretch as you might think. —Thomas Mulready
