You like ruin porn? Forget the clichéd photos of abandoned theaters in Detroit and Google Chernobyl.

On April 26, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, instantly making the region uninhabitable. The town of Pripyat went from a population of nearly 50,000 then to zero today. A region with more than 100,000 people was declared an “exclusion zone.” Homes, schools, hospitals, shops were all left behind with people never to return. It’s only about 80 miles from Ukraine’s capital city, Kiev, with a population of nearly 3 million.

Today, Cleveland’s Ukrainian Museum + Archives opens an exhibit devoted to commemorating the 30th anniversary of the worst nuclear accident in history. Hey, all you people who moved to Mentor to get away from the big bad city — you are about 14 miles from the Perry nuclear plant. Sleep well! The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-3pm.
