It’s the 20th year for the Tri-C High School Rock Off, and in that time, it’s grown exponentially. Back in the mid ’90s, forming bands was just starting to become cool among kids again. Now the range, sophistication and technical level of teenage bands is truly staggering, making this event truly a place to discover new talent.

Of course, the vast majority of the bands don’t survive, as their members head off to college. But a few do. The Modern Electric, who have built a buzz on the scene, were among the winners of the 2008 Rock Off. And this year, each of the four initial rounds will feature a performance by an alumni band, in addition to the 15-minute sets by the 40 competitors (9-12 bands and solo performers on each of four successive Saturdays). On opening night, Sat 1/9, that will be Goodnight Tonight, who have performed extensively around town at various festivals and special events.

A majority of participants come from the western suburbs and southern exurbs (including Summit County), with strong representation from Catholic schools. And while there are competitors from Pennsylvania, Michigan and even Missouri, there are none from Cleveland proper, other than from Catholic schools like St. Ignatius. Make of that what you will.

All the performances, including the “Final Exam” on 2/13, take place at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, with the first band going on at 6:30 each night. Admission is $10, which includes admission to all Rock Hall exhibits — a real bargain. And of course it’s all ages since cheering siblings and classmates inevitably make up a large part of the audience. The winning band gets an opening slot at a Live Nation show and the 2016 Tri-C JazzFest, among other prizes.
