Wed 12/9 @ 8PM

New York-based Steve Kortyka has come a long way since his childhood sax-playing days here in Cleveland. He headed for the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music first and after graduating, honed his professional chops as a cruise ship musical director.

He moved to New York in 2011, where he really spread his wings as a jazz musician, performing at all of the city’s major jazz nightclubs and recording three albums. And still more: he contributed to Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett’s collaborative Cheek to Cheek project released last year, playing on and arranging several tracks, and then he went on the road with them supporting the album. He also participated in Lady Gaga’s TV special, A Very Gaga Thanksgiving.

Now he’ll be making his debut at Akron’s BluJazz with his Steve Kortyka Sextet, featuring special guest drummer Dan Pugach from New York, along with an ensemble of young northeast Ohio players: alto sax player Chris Coles, trombonist Lawrence Galloway, pianist Theron Brown and bassist Dan Pappalardo. Tickets are $10.
