The National Endowment for the Arts has announced the grants for its first round of funding for the 2016 fiscal year. Among the awards announced were grants totaling $250,000 to 11 northeast Ohio arts organizations, ranging from very large to very small. They were among 1,126 projects funding in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and American Samoa.

They come on the heels of the landslide passage of the arts tax renewal by a margin of 75.2%, showing that the arts sector is one of the backbones of the greater Cleveland area, and that it is being recognized as such.’

The largest award, for $40,000, went to the Musical Arts Association, the parent organization of the Cleveland Orchestra. That was followed by grants of $30,000 to the Cleveland Modern Dance Association and Cleveland Public Theatre. The Cuyahoga Community College Foundation received $25,000, while the Akron Art Museum, SPACES Gallery, Zygote Press (pictured), the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Cleveland Play House got $20,000 apiece. The Sculpture Center was awarded $15,000 and Art House Inc. got $15,000.

The grants were awarded to support specific projects. For instance, Art House got its grant to support workshops for the creation of art works for next year’s Day of the Dead celebration in Gordon Square to support the culture of the area’s heavily Hispanic neighborhoods. Cleveland Public Theatre’s supports the development of a new devised production called Blue Sand Dreaming that will focus on issues of energy use, sustainability, oil and foreign policy. The Cuyahoga Community College grant is targeted to Tri-C JazzFest. And Zygote’s will help underwrite Zygote 20: Print Marathon, a series of projects honoring its 20th anniversary.

“I am pleased the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has recognized the importance of arts and culture to the Northeast Ohio community,” said Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, whose district includes most of the organizations.  “The arts promote opportunities for Ohio families, spurring imagination, creating new experiences, and fostering the development of new ideas.  Thanks to the NEA, 11th Congressional District recipients will expand and continue to provide valuable programs and initiatives in our communities.”
