The @Rock_Hall Offers Two Programs Reflecting on the Intersection of War and Music

WarandMusic

Thu 12/3 @ 7PM

Wed 12/16 @ 7PM

The Vietnam War occurred at a time of great cultural ferment and interacted with it in a significant way, to the point of being partly responsible for driving it. Rock music underwent a tumultuous growth period, producing artists of unprecedented creativity and social/political engagement.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is hosting a couple of events that delve into the relationship between war and music.

On Thu 12/3, authors Doug Bradley and Craig Werner will talk about their new book We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War. It features contributions from artists associated with protest music of the time including Country Joe, Eric Burdon and John Fogerty.

On Wed 12/16, the Rock Hall’s education department will present a program dedicated to the life of San Francisco-based concert promoter and Rock Hall inductee Bill Graham, whose clubs — the legendary Fillmores — provided a platform for the musicians of the late ’60s and early ’70s to explore and perform innovative music. Graham was a Holocaust survivor whose mother died in Auschwitz after sending 10-year-old Graham out of Germany. This program is being presented in conjunction with Violins of Hope Cleveland, a collaboration of numerous Cleveland social, cultural and artistic organizations surrounding an exhibit of violins that survived the Holocaust, currently at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Both programs take place in the Rock Hall’s Foster Theater and both are free with a reservation.
