November 22 is a day that many Clevelanders will remember — and not just because it’s the anniversary of the 1963 assassination of John F Kennedy. It was the day that 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot and killed outside the Cudell Recreation Center on Cleveland’s far west side by a Cleveland police officer. The case attracted national attention and multiple protests when video showed the officers driving right up on him and shooting instantly without giving themselves time to assess the situation or Tamir time to react.

A year later, no grand jury hearing has been held to determine if either of the officers involved should be charged with anything. Many are calling for county prosecutor Tim McGinty to remove himself and allow an special prosecutor to handle the case, feeling that his leaking of reports commissioned from police-friendly investigators saying the shooting “was reasonable” demonstrates that he’s already determined the officers’ innocence.

The anniversary of Tamir’s death will be marked at Cudell Rec Center not with a protest but with a Day of Remembrance. All respectful members of the public are welcome to attend. It’s also an opportunity to check out the butterfly garden that members of the community, including children who knew Tamir, have created at Cudell in his honor. The previous day Sat 11/21 from 11am-1pm, a discussion, community potluck and vigil will be held there.

“Please arrive by 3:15pm so that we can start promptly at 3:30pm,” says the organizers. “Please be mindful that this is to honor the life of Tamir Rice and his family. Privilege should be checked before arrival.”
