Anyone who has been around the Cleveland music scene for a while knows Peanuts. For nearly five decades, he’s been a presence at local clubs, with his byline appearing in numerous area publications.

And for four decades he’s been kicking off the Thanksgiving weekend with his annual Thanksgiving all-star jam session, now in its 41st year. The format’s always pretty much the same: a host band plays a set and then opens the stage to any musicians who want to come up — just bring your instrument if you’re a guitarist or bassist, or your own sticks if you’re a drummer. A drum kit and keyboards are provided.

Since the mid ’90s, the host band aka the All-Star Jam Band has featured a lineup of local music scene veterans. This year they include bassist Jim Bacha, guitarists Cy Sulak and Jerry Zsigo, keyboard player Debbie Z, drummer Jon “J.D.” Darling and vocalist George Yunis.

What changes is the venue: the event has been held at more than a dozen different rooms, most long gone. This year it’s at Ace’s Grille in the Southland Shopping Center. And it’s always free.
