Those of us who are more inclined to the arts, language and writing may not understand the huge push to get kids interested in the so-called “STEM” subjects: science, technology, engineering and math. But if your child has shown even a glimmer of interest in these, you might want to bring him or her — they love to see girls participating in this sort of stuff — to the Lincoln MINES technology conference at Lakewood’s Harding Middle School.

The activities will be based on the video game Minecraft, which combines independent design work and collective activities, teaching kids to work alone and together, and can be adjusted to the interests of a particular child. It will includes lessons on Minecraft, youth-led panels and lectures on various aspects of the game, a Pokémon education session, LEGO building, an information and demo session on Toys-to-Life games, a Mad Science Potion Magic Assembly, a Minecraft parody dance contest, a costume contest and arts & crafts. There will also be Internet safety sessions for parents.

It’s open to all northeast Ohio young people. It’s $15 for ages 5-17, $8 for adults. Children under 5 are free.
