Poet and playwright Ntozake Shange will always be best known for her 1976 poetry/dance/music/theater piece for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, which dramatized the effects of racism and sexism on a group of women. But the 67-year-old writer has also written a dozen other plays, half a dozen novels, numerous books of poetry and several children’s books.
She’s currently creating a new theater piece called lost in language and sound, which Karamu will be presenting as a work-in-progress. We’re told that it “explores the intuition of an artist of color in the 21st century though poetry, monologues and music. The ensemble takes us on a journey of experiences that have shaped the life of the poet through language, dance and music.”
Shange directed the production and noted Cleveland-born choreographer Dianne McIntyre, who has been collaborating with Shange for four decades, provided the choreography.
The performance is free but you must reserve a ticket. You can do so by calling the Karamu box office at 216-795-7077 or going to karamuhouse.org/lost-in-language-and-sound
