Cleveland Reggae Pioneers I-Tal Reunite for a Show @GrogShop

When Cleveland’s I-Tal formed in 1978, they became the root band for the city’s reggae scene, introducing many Cleveland rockers to the sunny, languid genre for the first time.

Half the band left in 1984 to form First Light, which expanded I-Tal’s influence even more with their massive regional popularity. I-Tal leader Dave Smeltz kept I-Tal going until 1990, touring heavily in the south and on the east coast and not playing much here at home.

In recent years, the old gang has gotten together from time to time to play special shows, usually around Thanksgiving. That’s what they are doing this year with this gig at the Grog Shop.

The opening act is young electronics-based duo That Poor Girl from Kent. They’re not a natural fit with I-Tal, but there’s a reason they’re on the bill. Band member Jason Smith was a close friend of I-Tal percussionist Chris Dunmore’s stepson Ryan O’Neil who died earlier this year, and this show is a tribute to him. Admission is $10.
