Fri 12/4 @ 7:30PM

Sat 12/5 @ 3PM

Tennessee Williams’ 1947 southern gothic play A Streetcar Named Desire, set in New Orleans, is one of the classics of American theater. Marlon Brando’s performance as the crude manipulator Stanley Kowalski made him a star and became an indelible part of his image.

There’s something operatic about the play’s grand emotions and secrets that are gradually revealed, leading to a tragic ending. And in the mid ’90s American composer Andre Previn set to music a libretto by Phillip Littell, which premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 1998.

Now Cleveland Opera Theater will tackle the emotionally draining three-act work with two fully staged performances at the Cleveland Masonic Auditorium. Benjamin Czarnota sings Stanley Kowalski, Rebecca Freshwater sings his wife Stella, and Andrea Anelli performs the pivotal role of Blanche DuBois, Stella’s sister, whose visit to Stella and Stanley’s home drives the action of the ply. It’s the Ohio premiere of the opera.

Tickets are $25-$99
