Of all the great authors of the macabre, early 20th century writer Edgar Allan Poe stands out for the way he was able to locate elemental human fears and embody them in gripping short-story narratives and poetry. His work goes beyond the basic Halloween haunted type stuff to touch our existential dread.

But it’s tailor-made for this time of year, which is why Cleveland’s Wordstage is presenting Poe and Fiends, an evening of readings by Poe and other poets and authors who wrote about otherworldly, frightening or morbid subjects including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, H.P. Lovecraft, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Christina Rossetti,  Robert Frost and Ray Bradbury.

WordStage members Skip Corris, Marci Paolucci and Tim Tavcar will offer what they describe as a “spine-tingling compilation of phantasmagoric poetry and prose,” accompanied by mood-setting music by Michael Petrosh who is the resident organist at Lakewood Presybterian Church, where the program takes place. An informal reception takes place after the performance.

Admission is by free-will offering.
